Hillier Nurseries at the Water Market Chris Packham guides a walk by the River Test Zyderhythmics swamping it up in a chilled Memorial Park

Water is not exactly in abundance in South East England at the moment.  Although some of us appreciate water all the time, many of us only become interested and look to assign blame when supplies started to dwindle.  This typifies how our society has lost touch with its dependence on the natural environment.  But it also focuses community attention on water - people who are not normally interested start to look for ways to do their bit to save water.

Hampshire Water Festival is moving back to Romsey this year.  After three excellent years in Winchester on and around the River Itchen and two years in the Test Valley, the Festival is moving back to Romsey.  Bands, street theatre, workshops, crafts, games, wildlife and fishing will make sure everyone has a fun day.  But it's more than that.  Through all the entertainment, fun and education, the Festival explores the social and cultural links between people and water - between the people of the Test Valley and their River Test.  It will give everyone who attends an opportunity to do their bit and get to grips with water.

What's On!

Street Theatre

Artizani -The Lifeboat The comic captain and his first mate drift around the park lost at sea.

See the prawns dancing and the octopus come to life! - whilst witnessing stirrings in the jellied eel jar and a worrying seafood smoothie

Swank - Green Fingered Gals

Known for their bright, bawdy comedy – the Green Fingered Gals are to be found watering the weedy and pruning the needy, these girls will keep all in herbaceous order

Drips Ahoy!

Sculpture and Habitats, Symbiotics.  'What is a habitat without water?" Join artist David Booth in an interactive workshop and performance exploring our habitats, natural and man-made, and their relationships with water. Take part in the production of a sculptural piece using recycled materials that will question issues relating to habitats, both natural and man-made, how we are interlinked and dependant on each other.  Participants in the sculptural workshops are also invited to take part in a performance piece led by dancers from the Wildern School who will be creating a special performance incorporating the theme of habitats and the sculpture developed on the day.

Dance and Habitats,  d.@rt Centre, Wildern School.  To complement David Booth’s sculptures dancers from the d.@rt Centre at Wildern School will be creating improvised dances which follow the progress of David’s art piece throughout the afternoon. Suggestions for the development of the piece will be invited from the audience.  If you are interested in finding out more about the arts activities at the d.@rt Centre please see our website www.wildern.org, or call the office on 01489 779471

The Private Life of the Kingfisher (David Lee, Wessex Film and Sound Archives).  A remarkable groundbreaking film of its day introduced by David Lee on the life of the Kingfisher, native to the Test river.  The film shows the intimate habits of the kingfisher, the unnerving aim of its lightening underwater dives, its courtship rituals, how it excavates its nest in the river banks and its nesting, breeding and fledgling habits.  A beautiful brilliant bird, Tennyson’s “secret splendour of the brooks”, this film allows us to enjoy sights only a few have ever experienced.
