Events along The River Itchen

The history of Winchester is tied to the internationally renowned River Itchen, which flows quick and clean through a range of environments within the city itself. To celebrate the range of important roles the river continues to play, we have organised following range of special free events along the river on the day:

Guided Tours (see below for booking information)

  • Hampshire Wildlife Trust will be conducting guided walks around the stunning Winnall Moors Nature Reserve during the day at 10.30am and 2.30pm.

  • In the evening, the Wildlife Trust will be hosting a bat walk along the river, at 8pm.

  • The Blue Badge Tourist Guides will be taking guided history and engineering walks in the city, discussing the interaction between the city and the river, at 11am and 2.30pm.

  • Guided tours of the Water Meadows at St Cross, at 10am and 2pm.

  • Guided tours of Abbey Mill, at 1pm. and 2pm.

All the above walks start at, and must be booked in advance via the Tourist Information Centre, (tel:01962 840500 / email: tourism@winchester.gov.uk spaces allocated on a first come first served basis.

Open Days

  • Winchester Canoe Club will be holding an open day, from 10.00am to 4.00pm, during which anyone can participate in supervised canoeing on the Itchen.  The club is situated behind the River Park Leisure Centre. Bring a towel and a change of shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting wet!

  • The National Trust property Winchester City Mill will open their doors for free from 11.00am to 4.30pm for the day and this will include an opportunity to explore the mill's working models, exhibition displays, impressive mill-races and an island garden. There will also be otter talks, and hopefully, activities for children.
